Dennis Basin – The Far Ridge

Dennis Basin today – Like I have never seen it before!

What a treat – crazy treat!

Peter and Phil and I set off the usual way – up to the col and then, around to the left. Peter and I had thought it would be a little deke over to the far ridge.

Um – no.

It was not unlike the way Cindy and Nicky and I had tried last fall. But this time, I knew what to expect – a long, long down into a pit of a valley. So we didn’t do that. We side-hilled massively, side-hilling not being my favourite thing to do, but anything to avoid that pit. And we did it! We got to the ramp that leads to the far ridge. Now we also know that the “usual” way over is to go to the top of the left hand ridge and then come down very steeply to that ramp.

Side-hilling was actually a better way to go.

And then up that far ridge – meadows straight out of “Sound of Music” and glacier lilies and anemones everywhere.

And then the up and down narrow ridges and more up and views to die for.

The hike had everything going for it including a couple of “watch your step” moments that made it all that much better.

The top? Wow! Another spectacular meadow with miles of flowers and views that didn’t stop.

What I am saying is that it was a wonderful day – made even better by hearing from the lawyer and knowing that we are going in to sign all the paperwork tomorrow.
