Whoever said “Money is the root of all evil” was a tad right (the actual saying is, “The love of money is the root of all evil”). I would amend this entire thing to say that “Money is the root of all stress.”
Of course, that’s oversimplifying in the extreme. However, money surely does account for a huge amount of stress in people’s lives. I wish we had a different system but we don’t. We live in a capitalist society that benefits the few wealthy on the backs of the poor and middle class. Hence stress.
And yes, money has been a huge source of stress for me in the last couple of years. And not just me – both of us. Our relationship has been stressed. Happily, that was eased today and it does feel good. Simon put if so well today when he said he felt “free.”
And so we can breathe more easily and get on with our lives in a more serene way.
Stress is interesting. I know that many people actually work better under stress. They procrastinate on projects until the last minute and then suck it up and work like fiends under pressure. This has never worked for me – not when I was in school and not now all these decades later. If there is something on my to-do list, it gets done instantly. Bills are paid when they arrive in my inbox. I can’t start writing in the morning until the laundry is done and the house is cleaned – whatever chores need to get done.
I do my best work when there is nothing on my mind other than the work at hand. I am at my most creative in a peace-filled, serene environment.
And speaking of work – I submitted a story today. Yay! I am not writing nearly as much as I did last year at this time, but I am writing. And I have ideas in the nurturing, germinating stage.
