White Queen

Early this morning, Simon, Sheila and I headed up to the Whitewater ski area and snowshoed to the top of White Queen.

Cold.

Did I say cold? Ah – I meant freeze-your-ass-off icy! Just wanted to be clear about that. I had five layers on and trust me – it was cold.

Happily, the hard work plus rising up into the sun made a nice difference. I’d say we were all peeling off layers within 45 minutes. Whew!

I was surprised by how much snow there was – just tons – some people already had skis on – but we didn’t run into many. Mostly, it was just our little group. And what a fabulous time we had. Sunshine to start with and then as we rose up the summit block, clouds and totally socked in at the top.

The snow was deep and powdery enough that we were able to do some nice snowshoe skiing on the way down.

What else can I say? A fabulous day!

And clearly – just the beginning of the winter snowshoe and ski season.

If we were to leave the Kootenays (which we are not) I would miss this – I would miss the alpine. And boy, would I ever miss the people! Some of the coolest, finest, nicest people I have ever met live right here. I feel blessed to know them.
