We made it! Second attempt. Yup, today we hiked to the top of Kuskanax Mountain. And, as Nicky and I agreed, jolly good thing we didn’t try it the first time – not just because of the weather, but the snow would have slowed us down so much it would have taken us much, much longer than expected.
What we didn’t know last time was the three false summits before we hit the top. But the top we hit! Yes! In 30 plus degree weather. I’m pretty sure that on the way down we were nearing 40 degrees.
What a fabulous day! Alpine! Views! A meadow full of glacier lilies! Views! Up in the mountains! It doesn’t get much better.
I admit that I had a fall. I stumbled over a foreign object near the top – could have been my foot. But nothing beats Nicky’s dramatic spill on the way down. She slid, took a turn, rolled and pretty much ended up almost upside-down on the edge of the trail. I, being the hero that I am, grabbed her (under the pits, which, given the heat and sweat situation, was the heroic part) and saved her life. Okay – maybe not her life maybe just her bum – or one small square centimetre of skin – or a tiny bit of her remaining dignity.
But it was epic. Sadly, I didn’t catch it on film. Imagine! I was more concerned about her little body than my blog posting. I’ll probably never live it down.
What else today? Oh yes, views! Great hiking companions of course. And then home to a husband who once again risked life and limb to finish the exterior of the house. He amazes me and I am utterly grateful. Not once has he intimated that I should be helping him and not going off hiking. He encourages me to do what I love. He is the best man on the face of this planet. Yes he is!
I love him.
