Christmas Eve

Merry Christmas.

My second Christmas with Simon – and it couldn’t be more different from the first – or more the same.

Our tree this year – chopped down from the back yard; decorated while tipsy (followed by a game of drunken Scrabble). No stockings this year, although to be fair, last year we filled booties. But we have presents under the tree. I’ve been baking even more than last year. The butter and sugar cartels are doing well. As I just said to Simon, just throw enough butter and sugar into a recipe and you can’t really go wrong.

I baked two stollen, chocolate truffles laced with alcohol (all gone a few days ago), linzer cookies (gone) and pecan bars (almost gone). Talking to my bro on the phone today – he who is a brilliant cook and baker – and he gave me his recipe for his favourite Christmas cookie – kipferl. So of course I immediately baked them – and just called him back to tell him they were indeed very, very good.

So now we have a whole bunch more buttery sugary calories in the house.

Holy carbs! Potato pancakes for dinner tonight (traditional German fare for Christmas Eve). Tomorrow – German apple pancake! Dinner tomorrow? A french onion tart (with lots of cheese) plus salad, followed by whatever butter/sugar combos are left in the house.

Yeah – staying off the scale for a while.

Missing Alisa a lot. Wish she was here. So much more fun with her here. Not that Simon isn’t fun….

And loving

And sweet

And crazy useful – making firewood as we speak.

It’s a beautiful Christmas – white, cozy, just the two of us – well – dogs. Definitely dogs.

Merry Christmas.
