This morning I have been reflecting (mulling?) on a variety of things. The small things, of course like love, life, time, empathy, happiness.
But seriously, I was considering the fact that our memories can conjure up a moment in our past when we were sad, angry, embarrassed, ashamed – any emotion on the vast scale – and we can feel those emotions again. We can relive that moment. We can re-experience emotional pain.
We cannot re-experience physical pain.
I wondered why that is.
And these are my thoughts:
Our physical body moves through time/space, from moment to moment. Our cells renew themselves every few years – and on we go. So we can carry a memory of physical pain but we can’t re-experience it: it’s gone. It’s in the past.
However, emotional pain occurs on a soul level and the soul exists outside time/space. We can access those feelings because they are there.
The question then is, why do we have to experience emotional pain at all? If we are a great, wise, powerful soul – why experience sadness, loss, heartbreak? I think there are two reasons. First, just like the physical world of nature (ourselves included) evolves, so does the soul. The soul evolves by incarnating into a human body. Through pain and sorrow we learn and grow. We become wiser, kinder, more loving. And if we don’t achieve that in this life – well, there’s always the next one.
Perhaps the more important reason we experience and re-experience these emotions is for the sake of empathy. Because my heart has been broken, I can understand when someone else is in pain. Because I have loved and lost, I can feel another’s pain and fold them into my arms and know how they feel.
It would be a cold and cruel world if we could not emphasize with others. And from that comes the knowledge that we are all one. We grow and evolve together. A soul cannot leave another behind to suffer. We are joined.
There is a yearning inside every soul to join together with all the pieces of itself. That’s why we fall in love – we want to become one. And that too is part of the evolution of the soul. When a soul recognizes another – really sees into the heart – then magic happens. Magic being another word for love.
