Let me just say this: after an 8 hour hike yesterday and 9.5 hours today, Abby is done. I think if I took her out for a full day hike again tomorrow, she would pack up her favourite stuffy and food bowl and leave home.
As for me, I feel curiously energized – raring to go again. Weird.
I have never done the Sooke Hills before: parts of it I loved – other parts not so much. Loved the beginning: the climb up Mount McDonald – views from the summit and the subsidiary bumps. Loved the company – wonderful people! I enjoyed the lakes – the long walk through the woods got old pretty fast and then, of course, there was the bushwhack around Grassy Lake: salal up to my chin, bog, fallen logs – it was interesting to say the least. On the other hand, what was super about it was that we made it and found the trail on the other side.
I somehow suspect we didn’t save any time with the “shortcut.”
I suspect I would have loved the last ridge walk near the ned but by that time, it was getting lake. We opted for a faster way down: just as well because, as I said, it was 9.5 hours from start to finish.
