Well – my last post was titled “Food.” Today it’s “Dust.” Maybe I’ll evolve to “Dirt” one of these days.
Okay – let
s talk about dust. I am inordinately proud of myself because this morning I dusted. Not only did I dust with a dry cloth but followed up with a dampened one to get all the surface dirt and grime off my stuff that tends to get grimy – kitchen canisters, toaster, top of fridge – you know – all the usual suspect places.
This is a big deal for me because I HATE DUSTING!
My mother used to make me dust every Saturday morning when I was growing up. Without exception, get out of bed (no sleep ins) and dust the whole apartment! AKkkkkkk! I can still feel the pain. As I grew older and stronger I also was given the chore of polishing the newly waxed floor with one of those heavy, weighted brushes with a long handle. To say that I hated it is a gross understatement.
Hence my hate of cleaning in general but dusting and doing floors in particular. And I no longer do chores on Saturdays. I would all be a lot easier if I didn’t care about dirt, dust and disorder. But I do, dammit. I grew up in a German household and if you want to see what clean looks like, just enter a German menage.
Oh, I’ve shaken it off somewhat. I can let the dust pile up for weeks at a time until I simply can bear it no longer and attack it like I did today. But bathrooms and vacuuming – that has to happen once a week.
On the plus side, I enjoy doing laundry. Something about folding and putting away clean clothes does it for me. I almost purr inside. And by the way, laundry is in the dryer right now – my reward for doing the dusting.
And lest you think I’m a slob – not so. I adore having everything WHERE IT BELONGS!’ And trust me, I know where everything belongs. This isn’t necessarily because I’m a neat freak – I’m not. It’s just that I have this huge aesthetic sense. When something looks good arranged a certain way (the books stacked on an end table just so) then that’s the way it has to be because any other arrangement is simply not as pleasing to the eye.
Beauty is very important to me. So – it’s all about beauty.
I have a day of no work today. Well – almost no work. I did some invoicing this morning and I REALLY like invoicing – almost as much as receiving cheques and taking them to the bank. But the day is grey, windy, rainy, chilly and just bloody miserable. It’s the kind of day when the lights are on ALL DAY or you’d stumble around in the dark barking your shins on everything including doorways.
If not for Abby I’d be huddled inside doing absolutely nothing all day. But I have Abby so I will bundle up in head-to-toe Goretex later on. In the meantime though, inside is good – inside a nicely dusted house.
